Happy Birthday To Us!

As June comes to an end, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you! As many of you know, June is our birthday month. It’s almost hard to believe that it’s been four whole years since we opened Above & Beyond Home Decor. We’ve learned so much and the store has certainly been transformed since we opened our doors on June 9, 2012. We wanted to open the store because we are interested in home decor, but also saw a huge void in Truro that could be filled. We wanted to provide Truro and surrounding area with more opportunity to shop local and we can’t thank you enough for all of your support over the past few years. We’re overwhelmed by how much the town has embraced us.

When we first opened Above & Beyond Home Decor, we were passionate about home decor, but it was really just an interest. Now, it’s part of our day to day lives. We love getting to source new trends and classics for you guys, and it’s certainly be fun to help you incorporate trends and decor into your own homes. One thing we’ve learned is that it doesn’t really matter what’s ‘on trend’, but instead, it depends more on an individual’s personal style. We’ve learned over the years that you should buy what you love and it will always have a place in your home.

We could go on and on about how we’re older and wiser now and all that jazz, but we won’t bore you. We thought it would be a good opportunity to look back at the store from our first summer we opened and share some of the pictures that we took that summer. Many of them were taken when we were first transforming our new space in the old Margolians building into our own store. Thank you for letting us into your homes! And we are so excited for the changes we’ve got planned for the years to come at Above & Beyond Home Decor!

The Emile Henry Pizza Stone – Homemade Pizza Has Never Tasted So Good

This week we are back to talk about another one of our favourite kitchen gadgets – the Emile Henry Pizza Stone. Because, who doesn’t love pizza? With the Pizza Stone, you can create delicious homemade pizza with perfectly golden and deliciously crisp crust.

Emile Henry is a French company that has been around since 1850 that still  manufactures its products in France, and they’ve certainly perfected the art of making ceramic dishes in that time. Made of Burgundy Clay and other natural materials, the Pizza Stone is part of their specialized tools line, and we’ve been hooked ever since they entered our store.

Not only is the Pizza Stone perfect for any kind oven (including the microwave), it even be used on the barbeque or over an open flame! It provides even heat distribution for a perfect crust and can withstand very high temperatures, creating a pizza that tastes like it’s straight from a traditional pizza oven.

IMG_5014The Pizza Stone is incredibly versatile, but also super easy to use. For best results, you should always pre-heat your pizza stone and then add your pizza to it to bake. The thinner the crust, the higher your cooking temperature should be. It is recommended that you pre-heat your Pizza Stone in the oven at 240°C / 475°F / Gas Mark 9 for 10 minutes and then cook for 10-12 minutes until perfectly golden and crispy. Never flour your stone directly. You should lightly flour your crust while rolling it out, and when your pizza is ready, be sure to use a pizza peel to place your pizza directly on the stone in the oven. Looking for an even easier dinner tonight? The Pizza Stone works wonders on frozen pizzas, too. Pop a frozen pizza out of the freezer, and place it on a pre-heated stone and experience store-bought pizza as you’ve never tasted it before. When your pizza is done, place it on a wooden board or a cloth and the heat from the stone will keep your pizza warm while you dine. And don’t worry about the clean-up because Emile Henry has made that easy too – it is dishwasher safe!

It makes great pizza, but the Pizza Stone is also great for thin crusted tarts, breads, appetizers, and general grilling. It’s made with a flat surface, so it can double as a trivot or a cheese tray – and you can cut directly on it. It’s also lighter than cast iron and the handles make it easy to transport. Basically, it’s a perfect gift for someone who’s hard to shop for, and even more perfect to bring home for yourself.

Want to know more? Come in and talk to us about it. This is truly a company we adore and a product we love. We could keep singing its praises – but we’ve got pizza to make.

Do the Twist – Spiralize your veggies!

spiralizer11Spiralizers are very trendy right now and we’ve certainly jumped on the spiralizing bandwagon! Basically, we’re obsessed. Spiralizing has so many benefits for your health and it’s incredible easy.

First of all, what is spiralizing? Well, it’s using a spiralizer to turn vegetables into delicious noodle-like strands. It’s an amazing substitute for pasta, and an ingenious alternative to wheat pasta for those of us with gluten allergies.

Spiralized veggies are also perfect for summer! Not only do you get to enjoy some of that beautiful local produce, but using vegetables as noodles lightens up any meal. This is ideal for those nights when you don’t want a heavy meal of pasta.

It’s still got all of the delicious taste though! Use your spiralizer with a variety of firm fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, potatoes, beets, carrots, cucumbers, apples, bell peppers, and of course the classic spiralizing veggie – zucchini. They create perfect vegetable noodles for pasta dishes, salads, and stir fries! You can also spiralize an apple to add to your oatmeal in the morning or spiralize some bell peppers for a delicious omelette. Or, if you’re looking for a treat, try deep frying some potato spirals for perfectly crispy shoestring fries.

When you’re not deep-frying your veggies, spiralizing is a quick and easy way to eat healthy! It’s also a great way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet. This low-carb option is great for those who are trying to manage their weight. For instance, one cup of cooked spaghetti has about 40 carbs and 220 calories compared to one cup of zucchini noodles with about 40 calories and less than 10 carbs per cup. They are also gluten free, paleo, vegan, grain-free and delicious!

The spiralizer is probably our favourite new addition to our kitchens at home and our gadget section here at the store. Now, we’re not saying this is the same as a buttery bowl of tortellini, but this gadget makes delicious meals. Add any sauce, meat or cheese and you’ve got a quick, healthy and delicious meal!

Think Pink: This Colour Deserves Your Attention

Let’s talk about pink. Yes, PINK. We promise we’re not referring that dusty rose nightmare from the 90s. Pink can go beyond your daughter’s bedroom and into your own. This colour is making waves in the design world. The colours on the market are often driven by economics and the colour industry’s standard colours for the year. It’s even Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2016. A pale shade of pink, Pantone’s Rose Quartz “is a persuasive yePantonet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure.”

Now, we’re not advocating for turning your home into Barbie’s Dream House. When pink dominates the room, it can seem overpowering or entirely feminine and sometimes we have a hard time separating it from the bright pink we associate with a teenager’s bedroom. However, pink can be an incredibly sophisticated colour that can easily be incorporated into a grown-up living space.

So maybe you’re wondering ‘why pink?’. Well, this colour is becoming more and more prevalent for a reason. This trendy new pale shade of pink adds warmth and serenity to a room without overpowering it. It can also be soft and soothing among cool metals or even add a vintage touch to your living space.

Decorating with pink can seem intimidating. No one wants to turn their living room into something reminiscent of great-grandma’s formal living room (with the plastic covered furniture that no one was allowed to sit on). We think this colour is worth re-considering.

It’s also easy to incorporate. We are seeing this shade of pale pink available in many different forms from our suppliers and we’re starting to notice it more and more as we peruse through our favourite design blogs and magazines – is anyone else as addicted to Houzz as we are?

You don’t need to add a large amount of pale pink to your room for it to work its calming magic. Continue reading
